My Danny Boy

by Lamplighter

Here he comes again! My little bundle of energy runs through my living room leaving a wake of destruction reminiscent of an F5 tornado. He climbs up onto his play table and stares out of the window, waiting for his Daddy to come home from work. Daniel is going to be two tomorrow! Not that he knows the difference... he's been acting two for the past six months. What a critter...

Daniel is quite the sight this afternoon. This little towheaded cutie has tried to put on his tank top, but only managed to thread his slender frame through the neck opening and one of the arm holes, so it is wrapped around his waist like some bright red loincloth. Add to this his diaper and brown leather sandals and the effect is stunning.

Daniel appears to have a shoe fetish. It is truly difficult for him to pass by a shoe without donning it, and it is even better if there are two shoes. They don't have to belong to him, nor do they have to match. I got such a kick last week out of watching him take off one of his sandals in order to put on one of my clogs. He went traipsing off with a limp, it seemed, from wearing my big shoe on one foot and his little one on the other.

Imagine my feeling of sheer wonder - or was it dread - when shoe-fetish boy came across his big brother's rollerblade! I just knew he'd have to try it on and all I could think of was to be sure I blocked the way to the stairs! Daniel saw that skate and immediately plopped himself down next to it and removed his shoe. (Actually, it was his brother's shoe.) He placed his tiny little foot inside of that huge skate and clapped his hands and smiled. Oh, how I love that smile! Then came that heart-wrenching moment for me - the moment he decided he had to stand up and try it out. It was like watching all three Stooges at once! He would stand almost all of the way up, then fall over or do a somersault, and that would set him off laughing. He'd put that foot back into the skate and try it again, always with laughter and no hint of frustration. It was such a treat to watch this effort, this laughter, this precious little boy!

Did I mention that Danny is a budding artist? He spends a good deal of time scribbling in his very own notebook. He holds a pen perfectly, a skill which took my other kids a few years longer to master. Yesterday I was doing my Bible study in the morning, and I came across some verses that I really wanted to remember, so I highlighted them. Just as I got the highlighter to the paper, Danny came into the room and saw me. Instantly I recognized that look in my little artist's eyes. It said, "Cool! Mommy draws in her Book! I'll have to try that!" I explained to him that this was Mommy's Book and that only I was allowed to write in it. You do know, of course, that within an hour my Bible had an original Danny drawing in it... How could I get upset? Instead, I signed it and dated it for him.

Danny loves to sing and to dance, although he won't do it on command. He has to be inspired on his own. I can appreciate that. I think song and dance are much more beautiful when they are spontaneous, and when he sings and dances it is truly beautiful. He has huge blue eyes and long eyelashes, so after a spin or two around the room he comes over to Mommy and smiles with his eyes. My heart just melts when he does that. What mother's heart wouldn't? In that tender moment between us he will speak very softly, almost in a whisper, and tell me he loves me. I'll hug him and pour my heartfelt love on him, and let him go to dance some more. Or act like a puppy dog or steal his brother's Legos or whatever else strikes his fancy at that moment. I am so glad that I get to be his mommy. So very, very glad.

Happy Birthday, Danny... I love you!
