An Angel For Sarah

by Lady Ty

"Lord, I need a miracle." Sarah prayed. "Please let him pull through this. He's all I have. I beg You to make him better. If You do this Lord, I will do whatever You ask of me. Please God, please." Tears trickled down Sarah's cheeks. She opened her eyes and looked at her husband in the hospital bed, tubes and machines connected to him, laying still as stone.

Her heart felt like lead pounding in her chest. "What a terrible thing to have happened," she whispered, "and with Christmas only a week away. My dear, sweet George." The tears welled up and she buried her face in her hands crying.

George had been out Christmas shopping the night before. While going through an intersection on his way home, a car sped from out of nowhere, running the red light. A drunk driver. The doctor had said George was lucky to still be alive. "You call this lucky?" she thought to herself. "How can a coma be lucky?" Sarah sighed and took hold of George's cool hand. She patted it a moment then lay her head on his thigh. She glanced at the clock. 3:00am. It had been 17 hours since the accident. She closed her eyes and drifted off.

As she slept, she dreamed. She was standing in an empty park that was blanketed with snow. Huge flakes were falling and sticking to her eyelashes. She wasn't cold however. There was a skating pond and in the center was a large tree decorated with brilliant white lights and an angel at the top. It was almost blinding. She heard her name being called. "Sarah, Sarah..." The sound eveloped her. She recognized the voice. It was George. "Sarah, my darling Sarah. I have to go now. Please don't be sad. Don't be angry with God. He needs me here now. Although you won't be able to see me, please don't be lonely. I don't want you to be alone, so, I am sending you an angel. I love you Sarah." The angel flew from the tree and wrapped it's wings around her. She was filled with love and light. Then a horrible single beep sounded. Long and terrible. Would it never end? She opened her eyes. The line on the heart monitor had stopped pulsing. That was the reason for the noise. Nurses rushed in and the doctor. Sarah didn't quite understand at first. It all seemed surreal. A nightmare come to life.

Sarah stayed at her sister's until after George's funeral. She just couldn't bear to go home to an empty house. A home without George was no home. Christmas dawned clear and cold. Gifts were exchanged, dinner was had, carols were sung. That night, Sarah decided to return home. She kept hearing George's voice telling her he was sending her an angel. As she pulled up the drive, the Christmas lights on her house twinkled merrily at her. "That's funny," she said to herself, " I thought they had been turned off." She walked into the house and saw the Christmas tree was lit up too. Underneath was a single package. A box with a big, red ribbon. There was a note taped to the top. Here is what it read:
My Dearest Sarah,
Christmas was always so special for the two of us. Even though we had no one else, we always had each other. We were never truly alone. I asked you not to be sad or angry when I left. You were a little of both but you got over it. However, I also asked you not to be lonely. You are. To ease your pain and loneliness, here is the angel I promised you.
Forever Yours Sarah,
Love George.

Sarah's hands shook and tears spilled out of her eyes. She untied the ribbon and lifted the top of the box. There was a soft,"mew". She stared unbelievingly at the fluffy, snow white angel inside. It peered up at her with bewildered blue eyes. "Mew." The tag around it's neck read: Angel.

Sarah lifted the kitten out and held it close to her heart. She squeezed it, crying into the fur. "Oh my little angel! I don't know how you or the letter got here but, it doesn't matter. It is truly a Christmas miracle. You are my Angel and I'll never be lonely again. I love you too George!"
